Corporate Reports selected DjVu software for its numerous advantages in encoding multi-page documents. DjVu is able to create incredible results by separating documents into layers and encoding each one differently. Complex documents are encoded with separate techniques for pictures (tonal) and black and white (text) areas. This results in documents that have extremely small file sizes while remaining incredibly sharp visually. Corporate Reports discovered that a typical 60-page report when stored as a PDF would take up over 4MB of file space; the same document could be scanned and stored under 800KB in DjVu format. Since many reports contained over 150 pages, the resulting PDF file came to over 10MB and proved extremely impractical to download for Corporate Reports' clientele.
Another important advantage Corporate Reports discovered was that DjVu documents do not need to be completely downloaded to be viewed unlike PDF. Customers were able to quickly download the first page of a document and then decide to continue or select a different document for download. "This significantly speeds up the research process, enhancing the visitor experience and avoiding the frequent frustration of waiting several minutes to download a document that turns out to not be the one required," said Peter Hood, Corporate Reports' Director.
Since purchasing DjVu, the increased traffic and return on investment (ROI) for Corporate Reports have been astronomical. The Web site has received numerous awards and customers now number over 15,000 per month accessing over 250,000 DjVu documents. The site now boasts over 80 percent of the top 500 UK companies, and Corporate Reports anticipates that will increase to 90 percent by the end of 2000.
Corporate Reports has also found huge cost savings using DjVu. Studies have shown the cost to reproduce one report in DjVu averages around £30 to £40 ($59 USD)-compared to approximately £1,000 ($1,500 USD) per PDF document. These major savings occur during the initial scanning and creation process with average costs using DjVu at only £0.50 (75 cents USD) per page. In addition, Corporate Reports found the quality to be so flawless with DjVu that the documents did not need final proofing by the company, unlike the PDF documents. Over the next year, Corporate Reports expects to convert over 2,000 documents. This translates to savings of over $3 million USD per year by using DjVu instead of PDF. "DjVu has not only made our operation commercially viable, but it has also meant considerable cost and time savings to our clients," said Tony Cieciala, Corporate Reports Director.
