ALSTOM

A global leader in energy and transport infrastructure, with offices in 170 countries, ALSTOM places the highest value on technologies that improve communication and customer satisfaction. So when the company's industrial gas turbine business in Lincoln, UK needed a faster way of disseminating complex content to a global audience, it looked for a digital solution - and found it with Document Express.

Find out how this UK-based company is using Document Express to streamline communication processes, enhance productivity, and create across-the-board efficiencies that bring a measurable business value.

Background

ALSTOM is committed to innovative technology; a key driver behind its search for faster ways to disseminate engineering drawings to more than 1,000 employees, partners and customers in regions around the world. In addition, ALSTOM employs 200 service engineers in the field, many of whom are dependent upon narrowband and wireless connections for receipt of information.

Challenge

Unfortunately, the previous infrastructure did not support rapid information dissemination. Engineering drawings and other complex content were stored as TIFF and PDF files. Huge and inefficient, frustratingly slow to download, the previous file management system lagged far behind the needs of crews who needed accurate information to perform their jobs. The TIFF files also lacked any kind of search capability, forcing users to spend hours of time scrolling through documents.

In addition, customers and employees with limited bandwidth connections found the PowerPoint presentations slow or impossible to download, clogging networks and causing needless delays in an online environment where every second counts. Clearly, a better solution was needed.

ALSTOM selected Document Express to:

  • Convert PDF and TIFF files into dramatically smaller, network-ready content that transmits with lightning speed -- a vast improvement for engineers and other users with wireless or narrow bandwidth connections.
  • Enable faster distribution of PowerPoint files across the web to a global audience.
  • Convert parts information currently stored on Microfiche files into a digital format that can be viewed online.
  • Make it easier to produce composite files from multiple sources including TIFFs and PDFs, with hyperlinks for easy access.
  • Provide an easy-to-use, immediately deployable solution that required little or no training.
  • Streamline the entire process of managing, distributing and accessing content.
  • Dramatically reduce archival costs.
